Certified Fiduciary™

A national professional fiduciary certification in development at
The Fiduciary Institute.

A Credential Designed for the Full Scope of Professional
Fiduciary Practice

Professional fiduciaries serve across multiple roles, including guardian, conservator, trustee, estate administrator, agent under power of attorney, often simultaneously and frequently for the same client. The profession requires integrated competency across legal authority, ethical decision-making, financial management, client advocacy, and interprofessional collaboration.

Existing credentials in the fiduciary space tend to focus on individual roles. A guardian certification measures guardianship competency. A trust certification measures trust administration knowledge. But few credentials reflect the integrated reality of how professional fiduciaries actually practice - across roles, across case types, and across the full spectrum of responsibility.

The Fiduciary Institute is developing the Certified Fiduciary™ credential to address that gap. The certification is being designed to assess competency across the core professional fiduciary roles within a unified framework, grounded in the same standards of structured, accountable practice underlying the Institute's training programs.

How It Differs From Existing Credentials

Several respected credentials exist within the fiduciary and guardianship space, and many professional fiduciaries hold one or more of them. The Certified Fiduciary™ credential is not intended to replace those certifications. It's being designed to complement them by addressing dimensions of practice that role-specific credentials were not built to assess.

Specifically, the Certified Fiduciary™ credential is being developed around three principles that distinguish it from existing options:

Cross-role competency. Rather than certifying expertise in a single fiduciary role, the credential is designed to assess integrated competency across guardianship, conservatorship, trust administration, estate administration, and agent under power of attorney. This reflects how professional fiduciaries actually work, managing multiple roles, often for the same client, within a unified practice.

Practice systems and accountability. The credential will assess not only knowledge but the operational systems fiduciaries use to manage cases, document decisions, maintain compliance, and ensure continuity. Competency in fiduciary practice includes how a fiduciary structures their work, not just what they know.

Alignment with a national standards framework. The certification is being designed in alignment with the professional standards and training architecture the Institute is building - connecting credentialing to structured education, applied tools, and ongoing professional development rather than treating certification as a standalone assessment.

Certification Design in Progress

The Certified Fiduciary™ credential is in active development. While specific requirements and assessment criteria will be published as the design matures, the certification is being built around the following elements:

  • Core competency areas spanning fiduciary law, ethics, authority and scope of practice, client and asset stewardship, practice operations and case management, compliance and risk management, and professional development.

  • Role-specific knowledge covering the legal frameworks, responsibilities, and practical requirements of each major fiduciary role: guardianship, conservatorship, trust administration, estate administration, and agent under power of attorney. The representative payee role, while not traditionally classified as a professional fiduciary role, shares many of the same responsibilities and accountability standards and is being considered for inclusion.

  • Standards-aligned assessment designed to measure both knowledge and applied competency: how practitioners assess situations, make decisions, document their reasoning, and manage their practice.

  • Continuing education requirements to maintain certification, ensuring that credentialed fiduciaries remain current with evolving legal standards, best practices, and professional expectations.

Part of a Structured Professional Development Path

The Certified Fiduciary™ credential is designed as the culmination of the Institute's professional development pathway, not as a standalone assessment disconnected from structured preparation.

The pathway progresses through Fiduciary Foundations™ (orientation to the profession), Fiduciary Practice™ (practice-building for new fiduciaries), and Fiduciary Pathways™ (role-specific training across fiduciary functions). The Certified Fiduciary™ credential is intended to validate the integrated competency developed through this progression, while remaining accessible to experienced fiduciaries who can demonstrate equivalent knowledge and practice readiness through other means.

Detailed eligibility requirements, including whether completion of specific Fiduciary Institute programs will be required or recommended, will be published as the credential design is finalized.

Development Timeline

The Certified Fiduciary™ credential is in early-stage design. Development is informed by the Institute's ongoing work in curriculum, professional standards, and practitioner engagement.

The credential's timeline is linked to the maturation of the underlying training programs and assessment framework. As the Fiduciary Pathways™ curriculum and the Institute's professional standards work progress, detailed certification requirements, assessment criteria, and a projected launch timeline will be published.
